Second Baltimore DPW Employee Dies While On Duty, Department Confirms

Timothy Cartwell, a solid waste worker assigned to the Reedbird Sanitation Yard died on Friday morning after sustaining critical injuries while collecting trash in an alleyway in the 1800 block of Baker Street.

Cartwell was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he later died from his injuries, officials confirmed. 

His death comes months after Robert Silver II, also a member of the Bureau of Solid Waste, died on the job after suffering a medical emergency. 

The circumstances surrounding Cartwell's injuries and subsequent death remain under investigation by the Baltimore Police Department.

"We are fully committed to supporting all employees affected by this tragedy," they addd. "Counseling services and support are available to staff through the City’s Employee Assistance Program."

According to the agency, senior DPW leadership was on hand to offer support at the hospital.

"The Baltimore DPW is heartbroken to announce the loss of a dedicated member," officials said. "His passing is a profound loss for our agency, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues."
